I feel that this post will resonate with most people. We all have people in our lives that make up the core of our existence and we wish to do the best by them. This for me is the truth – life is worth living because of the people in it. Money and comforts are important but come after the essential needs of human existence. These being, love and affection and of course, nourishing food.
My close family and friends are important to me, my parents and brother live back in India and I live here in Perth. I can not control or help what they do and how they pass their every-days – however, at least for Tim and babu, I can control what goes into their diets. I can not say I always manage to cook them the best of everything but I try.
I will be honest and confess that I do not get around to cooking for Babu everyday. I would like to, and add more veg to her diet than then bought wet food along with her dry – but, no I don’t get to it everyday. She is precious to us and this is where her daily dose of turmeric comes in.
There are a few different versions of “golden syrup” going around the internet – however this is basically just what I have understood from my Indian background and what the body needs to reap the best rewards from turmeric. What is more, sometimes I dash this into a human dish too, if I feel pressed for time. So there you are.
I also use this to make my morning turmeric teas from time to time. Just add a tablespoon of this tonic to a hot cup of water, along with a dash of lemon and honey. (make sure to not add honey to boiling water – this produces toxins, reason why I never cook with honey.) This is extremely convenient on workday mornings, instead of assembling all ingredients in my cup individually. This tea is amazing during the cold and flu season. Build up your immunity people and steer clear of antibiotics unless they are a must. Don’t get me started on the bacterial immunity to antibiotics epidemic because of irresponsible uses.
I give puppy a tablespoon of this syrup with her food + fish oil tablets every 3rd day or so. She also gets a good helping of milk Kefir from time to time to keep her gut bacteria happy.
Turmeric needs to be cooked before our body can process the beneficial agents in it. It also needs black pepper to aid digestion of the same agents. Cinnamon also helps break it all down. And coconut oil, is of course present to make it a wholesome blend.
So without too much ado, here is the simple and short recipe of my kind of turmeric tonic.

minutesIngredients
1 cup of organic turmeric powder
3 tbs organic cold pressed coconut oil
1/2 tbs ground black pepper
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon powder
4 cups water
Directions
- In a thick bottomed pan, bring the water to a rolling boil.
- Add all the dry ingredients once its boiling and add the coconut oil as well.
- Stir through and once well combined, switch off the flame.
- Once cooled, transfer to clean glass jars and refrigerate.
Notes
- This will last for 2 -3 months in the fridge and if you live in a cool climate, you can also keep the running bottle out on the counter. This usually doesn’t go bad quickly, but always trust your nose.
